Building Addition Continues Campus Traditions
Chartered in 1874, the Loomis Chaffee School is a coed boarding school located on a rural 300-acre campus in Windsor, Connecticut. AOS Architects assisted the School with goals to establish a master plan for improving an existing campus quadrangle and enhance the strong traditional campus aesthetic.
The Scanlan Campus Center, which opened to great acclaim in the fall of 2018, has become a vibrant and active center of student life, with spaces for dining, studying, and socializing. The Center, which is an addition to the distinctive 1913 Loomis Hall, the School’s original refectory, includes two commercial kitchens, a large, open servery offering made-to-order meals, two dining halls that accommodate 575 students, a retail cafe, a state-of-the-art maker space, a variety of flexible and inviting student lounge areas, a bookstore, and faculty and student organization offices. The building is filled with natural light and offers views out to the campus through generous windows. A large skylight in the servery, combined with beautiful and durable finishes, creates an inviting atmosphere for students and food service workers. A paved terrace adjacent to the dining room provides a casual and inviting place for students to gather overlooking the activity of the academic quad.
