St. David’s Episcopal Church
St. David’s Episcopal Church is located in the heart of downtown Austin, on a single city block. In addition to a historic sanctuary built in 1853, the Church’s existing facilities include a parish hall and classroom building, a multi-purpose hall, a parking garage, and a former residence which currently houses Caritas of Austin, a social services program. Our firm created a phased master plan for development of the church’s facilities on this tight urban site. The master plan emphasizes the design of new buildings and outdoor spaces that complement the historic character of the existing buildings.
The Church is an active 2,000 member parish with plans to extend its outreach mission, youth and music programs and to build a new daycare facility. Our firm helped the Church evaluate their present facilities and examine ways to best accommodate their expanding programs. The master plan also included a detailed facilities assessment that identified ADA and code issues, maintenance and mechanical systems’ needs, and overall physical facility conditions.
Phase I has been completed, including new classroom spaces, offices, meeting rooms, an alternative worship space, and a new central utility plant. A former alley was acquired by the Church and transformed into a series of terraces that step down the site. The middle terrace includes a labyrinth that is shaded by an overhead trellis. The south courtyard was transformed into an outdoor play space and is shaded by a foliage-covered pergola.
