Groundbreaking Ceremony for the SouthSide Commons

On May 17 Atkin Olshin Schade Architects had the honor of celebrating the ceremonial groundbreaking for the SouthSide Commons project at Lehigh University. Teamed with EdR, a nationwide developer of collegiate housing communities, this this 428-bed apartment style student housing P3 development is the first residential project as a part of Lehigh’s “Path to Prominence” vision for improving and increasing campus facilities and increasing enrollment.  AOS designed this new facility located on the western edge of campus in Bethlehem’s SouthSide neighborhood to bridge the University and community, replacing an asphalt laden parking lot with a new 5-story building that will feature a fitness center, study rooms, interior bike storage, and outdoor recreational spaces in 3 distinct courtyards.

"This development will be an excellent option for students seeking a more independent living which is still a part of campus and creates a sense of community that is normally associated with traditional residence halls." Tom Trubiani.

Speakers at the event included Lehigh University President John Simon, Patricia Johnson, Vice President for Finance and Administration, EdR President Tom Trubiana, Mayor Robert Donchez of the City of Bethlehem, and Charmain of the Lehigh University Board of Trustees Kevin Clayton. Construction began earlier this spring, and is scheduled for completion and occupancy in August, 2019. Working with AOS is BALA Consulting Engineers, O’Donnell + Naccarato Structural Engineers, Andropogon Landscape Architects, and Pennoni Civil Engineers.
