Revitalized Athletic Building Centers Health & Wellness on Campus
AOS Architects renovated and expanded Penn State Berks’ Beaver Community Center to provide purpose-built environments for the School’s Division III athletics programs, intramural athletics, the kinesiology program, fitness courses, and other recreational activities and special events. The project also includes a bridge connection and addition to the Perkins Student Center to accommodate a future dining hall and campus store. The project expands the original 28,000 sf building and transforms a boxy, anonymous structure into a welcoming, light-filled athletic facility with landscaped courtyards that activate and connect the building to the heart of the campus.
Program spaces include a fully equipped athletic training and treatment center; new varsity locker rooms and team rooms; a light filled, multi-level fitness center; general use classrooms; an auxiliary gymnasium; and a suite of athletic and faculty offices.
The project also includes air conditioning and fire protection systems for all new and existing spaces. The design of the project incorporated a multi-phased construction schedule to allow for continuous operation and occupation of the building throughout.
AOS is Architect of Record for the project, with Hastings + Chivetta, Design Architect.
