Santo Domingo Groundbreaking

.

Atkin Olshin Schade Architects recently participated in the groundbreaking for the Domingo Housing project at Santo Domingo Pueblo, where we have been working on numerous projects for 10 years. This 41-unit affordable housing project, funded with Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), is located near the beautifully restored trading post and New Mexico Rail Runner station. The development is one aspect of a broad strategy to provide improved housing for the tribe. Last year we completed an inventory and assessment of more than 300 homes in the historic village as well as rehabilitation of 14 traditional adobe homes. We are also honored to be working with tribal artists on the Heritage Arts Trail, funded by a competitive ArtPlace grant, that will provide a safe pedestrian link between the traditional village and the new LIHTC development. The groundbreaking was covered by the Santa Fe New Mexican and the Heritage Trail is featured in the current summer travel magazine, Bienvenidos.

The completed rehabilitation and new housing development are the subject of studies by scholars from the JPB Foundation, Harvard University, and the University of Virginia as part of an investigation of healthy homes in American Indian communities. Shawn Evans, AIA, Principal, presented our work at a recent Healthy Housing Workshop at the Pueblo.
