The Academy of Music & Scanlan Campus Center Honored in Recent Awards
We are excited to share that the recent balcony restoration at the Academy of Music received a Grand Jury Award at this years’ Preservation Achievement Awards.
One of many projects that AOS has worked on with the Academy, the project scope for the exterior rehabilitation of the Locust Street and Broad Street balconies at the Academy of Music includes the full restoration and rehabilitation of the original balcony including a new waterproof membrane, the installation of a new cast-stone balustrade and supporting brackets below, and a new lighting scheme that highlights this restored façade and structure.
The Academy of Music is Philadelphia’s oldest and most venerable concert hall as well as a registered National Historic Landmark. Designed by noted architect Napoleon LeBrun with Gustave Runge between 1855-57, the facility is characterized by a highly decorated neo-Baroque interior while the Renaissance Revival exterior is modeled after La Scala, Milan’s renowned opera hall.

The Scanlan Campus Center at Loomis Chaffee School was also honored recently with a Brick in Architecture Award from the Brick Industry Association. This award showcases projects that highlight brick as an integral design element.
The Scanlan Campus Center’s traditional brick exterior seamlessly blends the new addition with the campus’ existing Georgian Revival brick buildings. Using its materiality to recall traditional New England meeting houses and other similar community spaces, the new Campus Center – with its slate roof and large bow window – serves as a timeless focal point for Loomis Chaffee’s campus.
